RESEARCH: Power Drinks and Your Pearly Whites

A study done by the Academy of General Dentistry revealed that certain beverages with carbonic, citric, and phosphoric acid can wreak havoc on your teeth. Red Bull and Gatorade showed up worst.

So…Exercise caution. Limit consumption. Use a straw. Rinse or brush after your beverage. Remember, these drinks are packed with calories too. Although water seems a bland alternative it does wonders for your body and your waistline!

OIL ESSENTIALS: 15 Household Problems Solved with Essential Oils (Part 1 of 3)

#1 HEADACHE – a drop of rosemary/lavender or peppermint onto the back of your neck

-a few drops of essential oil onto small piece of terry cloth and toss into dryer
-five drops essential oil to 1/4C unscented fabric softener or water

#3 FLEAS – four drops of peppermint along dog’s spine while outside. Watch fleas tumble out of the coat either anesthetized or dead. Comb off. Use less oil for smaller dogs and dilute for cats.

#4 NATURAL FLEA COLLAR – saturate piece of soft rope with pennyroyal or tea tree, roll up in handkerchief and tie loosely around the animal’s neck. CAUTION: Tea tree can be deadly for cats.

#5 ALERTNESS/STRESS – diffuse rosemary or peppermint during long car trips, while reading or studying. Peppermint works great on sore muscles too.

MODALITY MINUTE: What exactly is Ear Candling?

Ear candling isn’t for everyone and many try to debunk it. This is evident with one quick Google search! But for those who’ve experienced its relief enough can’t be said about its effectiveness!

Ear candling is painless and relaxing and takes approximately 10 minutes per candle. A beeswax or paraffin covered muslin cone is gently inserted into the ear and lit at the other end. Smoke is released from unlit end and is believed to be the catalyst in candling, drying out excess moisture in the ear canal, loosening infection and candida behind eardrum, and drawing it out by osmosis and pulling it into the remaining, unburned candle.

Ear candling may help with chronic headaches or sinus conditions, ear infections, allergies, and vertigo. Minor hearing loss due to excessive earwax build up might also be helped. It is not beneficial if you have any damage to the eardrum, ear tubes, congenital hearing loss, ankylosis of the stapes, acute mastoiditis, or recent surgical procedures to the ear.

Should you suspect an ear infection or other ear condition, stopping first at the doctor and getting a diagnosis is ALWAYS the smartest and suggested thing to do.

GENTLE REMINDERS: Love After Valentine’s Day

In his book Holding on to Romance, H. Norman Wright says there are four romance killers and two romance necessities:

1. Routine romantic gestures = boring
2. Dating = the two of you + interaction (ie movies don’t cut it)
3. Emotional, Nonrational, Impractical = good memories
4. Predictability = romantic rut
5. Unconditional commitment to an imperfect person
6. Concern, love, speaking your spouse’s love language, listening, and giving of personal attention

THE MAILBAG: I have had NO pain in my ears today because of the ear candling!

I am truly amazed how well ear candling worked for me. I had an earache for about a week and a half that seemed to be getting worse. I went to my MD and he told me I had fluid behind my ear. He prescribed antibiotics and a nasal decongestant. I am trying to get away from taking antibiotics so I decided to try ear candling. I was a bit skeptical but thought I’d give it a try. I got a treatment on both ears, with a double treatment on the worse ear. It was quick and painless.

At first I thought it didn’t work because my ears were still bothering me after I had the treatment, but by the next morning, my ears were completely better! Amazing!!! Thanks for doing that for me. I’m so glad I didn’t take the antibiotics! -Tracey P. (Celebration, FL)
