No Fooling, Which One Are You?

In his book “Love, Medicine and Miracles” Bernie Siegel MD says there are two types of patients, Ordinary Patients and Exceptional Patients.  Ordinary Patients accepted their diagnosis and do nothing to alter their lives to increase their chances for a cure. Ordinary Patients see disease from a victim viewpoint and seldom recover from illness.

At the other end of the spectrum there are Exceptional Patients. They refuse to participate in defeat and instead manifest the will to live life in its most potent form. They take charge of their own lives and work hard to achieve health and peace of mind. They view doctors as part of their team. They do not fear the future and realize that happiness is an inside job.

Aromatherapy:  Lavender – The Swiss Army Knife of Essential Oils

When I speak of ‘lavender’ I am talking about Lavandula angustifolia, sometimes called Lavandula officinalis.

Lavender is one of those oils that should be in everyone’s first aid kit for it is the all-purpose, pull-it-out-in-a-pinch essential oil.  Whether it is a burn/sunburn (1-3 drops on burn location), inflammation (3-6 times as needed), or fitful sleep (1 drop under the nose) it can help. Lavender is one of the mildest oils and can be used for children and the elderly undiluted. Lavender is very calming but also mood uplifting. It’s great for PMS.

Often the hybrid lavandin or a synthetic linalool and linalyl acetate are sold as lavender.  They smell the same to an unsuspecting nose but buyer be aware.  They do not carry the same therapeutic properties as the angustifolia and many brands contain them. Using lavender on a burn with one of these extenders in it may make the burn worse and not help the healing of it. (For example: Lavandin is commonly used to extend lavender. It has 5-12% camphor as one of its constituents…NOT something you want to apply to a burn.)

Personally, I use lavender essential oil from Young Living. It is with these oils that I have seen the therapeutic effects that I am after when I use essential oils.  A client purchased some lavender for her husband’s bruising due to blood thinners.  She said that the next morning there was marked improvement in the skin coloring.  With results like that, I know she got what she wanted.

Gentle Reminders:  The Detox Process – Death and Rebirth

Easter and spring represent rebirth. This wonderful season typically follows a time when Earth comes out of its cold, contracted, dark, death-like state and begins to literally shower us with color, warmth, watering, and sunshine.  According to the Law of Nature it is a necessary transition.  It demonstrates the Cycle of Life.

This same thing applies to our bodies.  Death and rebirth happen simultaneously as body cells die and new ones are regenerated.  Our health depends on how well natural detoxification occurs in our body.  We can assist our body by helping the organs of detoxification – the lungs, skin, colon, kidneys, and lymphatic system.  Here are some ideas:

  • Take good deep breaths when you think about it
  • Steam to help the skin sweat
  • Do some skin brushing to exfoliate the dead cells
  • Mobilize the lymph with massage therapy
  • Drink lots of water to keep kidneys filtering
  • Colon cleansing with nutritional foods or mechanically with colonics
